Client services – Hitting the right mark
Grant provides philanthropic services based on his twenty years of experience as a gift planner, lawyer, senior fundraiser and volunteer who has worked with local grass roots organizations as well as national and international charities. Grant provides individualized services to the following client groups to hit the right mark for each specific philanthropic need.
Analysis of past and current fundraising efforts and development of strategies for increased fundraising activity and revenue results;
Coaching and mentoring of fundraising staff on an individual or group basis;
Development of approaches to all levels of government including strategy for meetings with government officials and specific funding proposals; and
Providing expertise on major and planned giving fundraising including creation of cases for support, development of targeted marketing campaigns, prospect identification, donor visit strategies and stewardship efforts to support life long relationships with donors.
Guidance for individuals, couples, families and foundations regarding development of overall philanthropic plans or specific major or planned gifts based on the charitable intent and financial objectives of each donor.
Support may include development of general material on philanthropy, training sessions for advisors and their clients, and work in partnership with advisors and their clients to develop specific estate and financial plans encompassing charitable giving.
Volunteer and staff leadership of charities
Counsel to volunteer and staff leadership of charities includes tailored board presentations, coaching and mentoring of senior volunteers and staff in fundraising including prospect identification, preparation for donor visits and proper stewardship of current donors.

Grant’s background as a volunteer for over four decades, coupled with his legal training and experience as a senior fundraiser since 1995 gives him a unique perspective to advise charities, donors, professional advisors and volunteers today.
Grant has been involved as a volunteer with not-for-profit organizations since he was a young boy. He became a board member for a national organization when he was a teenager and in his early 30’s served as Chair for a large non-profit health care provider. His volunteer work continues to the present day.
Grant began his professional legal career with the Toronto Transit Commission. He has been called to the Law Societies of British Columbia and Upper Canada. He is currently a member of the Law Society of British Columbia and Estate Planning Council of Greater Vancouver. As a member of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners, Government Relations Committee, Grant works as a volunteer to promote charitable giving through advantageous government legislation and policy.
Grant’s legal training has assisted him as both a senior fundraiser and volunteer in creating and operating domestic and foreign-based charitable foundations, overseeing estate administration programs and he is recognized as a Canadian leader in gift planning.
Grant is a well-known fundraising professional with over twenty years of experience working with conservation, education and health organizations at the provincial, national and international level. Grant’s experience includes working on alumni, annual, capital and endowment campaigns, communications and government relations. Specific expertise in major gift fundraising and gift planning.
Grant’s major accomplishments and experience include:
(a) Senior Management/Strategic Planning
Grant has been a member of senior management teams with major national and international organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society, Ducks Unlimited Canada, Pearson United World College and the University of British Columbia. This work has included development of organizational business and strategic plans as well as utilization of the “on-site process” created by the United Way to develop future fundraising strategies.
(b) Management of staff teams
Since 1995, Grant has managed teams of staff at local, provincial and national levels in the areas of alumni relations, annual fundraising campaigns, communications and marketing, direct response, donor stewardship, gift planning, major gift solicitation and prospect research.
In his most recent position as National Director of Development with Ducks Unlimited Canada, Grant had fifteen direct staff reports across Canada and fundraising activity grew from $9.3 million in 2012 to a record high of $11.7 million in 2013.
(c) Support for grassroots and leadership volunteers
Grant started at the Canadian Cancer Society in 1995 supporting local grass roots volunteers across British Columbia in over 50 local and regional offices. This support included workshops to encourage volunteer prospect identification, gift solicitation and donor stewardship. This work continued through Grant’s tenure at Ducks Unlimited Canada which has close to 140,000 grass-roots volunteers across the country.
At the University of British Columbia and Pearson World College his work concentrated on supporting leadership board members in major and planned gift solicitation. Grant also concentrated on establishing and supporting foundations for volunteer fundraising and alumni relations in Canada, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the United States.
(d) Major gift solicitation and capital campaigns
In Grant’s fundraising career, he has personally solicited and worked with teams of staff and volunteers to secure six and seven figure gifts from major donors such as the:
Max Bell Foundation, BMO Financial Group, CIBC, CN, EnCana, Fednav, Holt Foundation, Khosrowshahi Foundation, J.W. McConnell Family Foundation, Methanex, Molson Foundation, Nexen, Pathy Family Foundation, Power Corporation, RBC Foundation, Scotiabank, TD, Vancouver Foundation and the Howard R. Webster Foundation .
While at Ducks Unlimited Canada, Grant was the the staff lead on a feasibility study for a comprehensive campaign with a goal of $500 million for Canada as part of a $1.7 Billion continental campaign and at the Canadian Cancer Society established its first capital campaign in British Columbia.
(e) Gift Planning
Grant established the gift planning program for the Canadian Cancer Society in British Columbia and has been recognized as a leader in the field for close to twenty years. Highlights of his work in gift planning include securing the Canadian Cancer Society’s first endowment gift of over $1 million, developing marketing plans for gifts of securities to the hi-tech sector and charitable remainder trusts in partnership with TD/Canada Trust, as well as the first gift planning seminar in Cantonese in Canada.
In a volunteer capacity, Grant has been the National Education Director of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP), Chair of the CAGP Greater Vancouver RoundTable, faculty member of the CAGP Gift Planning Course as well as a member of the editorial board of Gift Planning in Canada.
(f) Government relations and funding proposals
While at Pearson World College, Grant was responsible for government relations and funding proposals to all levels of government in Canada. This work over eight years included developing close relationships with provincial government departments, Premiers’ offices and the Prime Minister’s Office. Grant also supervised the visit of Prime Minister Harper and Minister Baird to Pearson College to announce the federal government’s EcoEnergy initiative in 2007. This work resulted in five and six figure government support for the College.
Grant is currently a member of the Government Relations Committee of the Canadian Association of Gifts Planners and speaks on government relations at conferences across Canada.
Grant opened his consulting practice in 2014 to continue his work in philanthropy with donors, fundraisers, professional advisors, senior staff and volunteers in support of the not-for-profit sector.

Dr. Paul Schervish
Paul G. Schervish is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center on Wealth and Philanthropy (CWP) at Boston College. Schervish served as a Fulbright Scholar for the 2000-2001 academic year at University College Cork in the area of research on philanthropy. For the 1999-2000 academic year he was appointed Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy. He has been selected five times to the NonProfit Times annual “Power and Influence Top 50,” a list which acknowledges the most effective leaders in the non-profit world.
He received a bachelor’s degree in classical and comparative literature from the University of Detroit, a Masters in sociology from Northwestern University, a Masters of Divinity Degree from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Schervish directed the “Study on Wealth and Philanthropy,” an examination of the strategies of living and giving among 130 millionaires, and the study, “The Contradictions of Christmas: Troubles and Traditions in Culture, Home, and Heart.” With Mary A. O’Herlihy, and John J. Havens, Schervish produced the 2001 High-Tech Donors Study, which interviewed high tech executives to get to the heart of the “new philanthropy.” In 2000, Schervish and Havens, in conjunction with Bankers Trust Private Banking, published the Bankers Trust Survey on Wealth with Responsibility, a study of wealth holders with net worth in excess of $5 million regarding their charitable giving and volunteering, attitudes about social issues, socially responsible investing, trust and estate planning, and the transfer of values to heirs. In 1999, Schervish and Havens released the report, Millionaires and the Millennium: New Estimates of the Forthcoming Wealth Transfer and the Prospects for a Golden Age of Philanthropy, which estimates the wealth transfer over the next half century to be between $41 trillion and $136 trillion. He helped to find the Wealth & Giving Forum, a peer-centered endeavor to deepen the philanthropic engagement of the nation’s 7000 wealthiest families. Current activities include developing and training fundraising and financial professionals in the use of a discernment methodology based on Ignatian principles for guiding wealth holders through a self-reflective process of decision-making about their finances and philanthropy. With support from North Dakota’s Impact Foundation, Havens and Schervish completely revised their wealth transfer model which is to be released in 2012 in the report, Great Expectations: A New Model and Metric for the Continuing Wealth Transfer. Over the past twenty-five years, CWP has received generous support from the T.B. Murphy Foundation Charitable Trust, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, the Lilly Endowment Inc., the John Templeton Foundation, the Impact Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Boston Foundation, and the Wieler Family Foundation.
Schervish has published in the areas of philanthropy, the sociology of money, the sociology of wealth, labor markets, unemployment, biographical narrative, and sociology of religion. He presented the 2008 Annual Lecture for the Lake Family Institute on Faith and Giving which is published as “Receiving & Giving as Spiritual Exercise: The Spirituality of Care in Soul, Relationship, and Community.” Schervish is the editor of and contributor to Wealth in Western Thought: The Case for and against Riches (Praeger, 1994). He is principal editor ofCare and Community in Modern Society (Jossey-Bass, 1995) and the principal author ofTaking Giving Seriously (Indiana University Center on Philanthropy, 1993) and of Gospels of Wealth: How the Rich Portray their Lives (Praeger, 1994). His most recent book, co-authored with Keith Whitaker, is Wealth and the Will of God: Discerning the Use of Riches in the Service of Ultimate Purpose (Indiana University Press, 2010). He is completing work on Aristotle’s Legacy: The Moral Biography of Wealth and the New Physics of Philanthropy.
Schervish serves regularly as a speaker and consultant on how to surface and analyze the moral biographies of wealth holders, on the motivations for charitable giving, on the demographic patterns of wealth and charitable giving, on donor-centered discernment approach to fundraising, and on the financial spirituality and dynamics of financial morality, including working with parents about “how much is enough” to provide for heirs.
